Tracer Wire / Underground Locating

Underground Utility Locating system solution

Rather than providing power to equipment, tracer wire allows underground non-metallic pipelines to be located in the future. A complete system includes tracer wire, waterproof connector, ground/anode, test station, access point, marker post, inspection record and APWA color identification.

VOLTIC STONE S01 14/1 pure copper tracer wire is a practical entry point for residential, irrigation, and private utility locating. Municipal, gas, HDD, and pipe-bursting projects should be specified separately for 12 AWG/10 AWG CCS, high-strength insulation, and matching accessories.

Case 1 · Private water mains/irrigation

Residential PEX/PE Plumbing and Irrigation Mains Open Trench Tracer

When end users or irrigation contractors dig trenches and lay non-metallic pipelines, tracer wire are laid simultaneously. The locator can be used for tracking in future repairs, installation of sprinkler irrigation, or to avoid accidental digging.

System Equipment

PE/PEX water line, irrigation main, sprinkler valve box, waterproof splice, ground point, locator access point.

Cable Route

The tracer wire should be laid along the same trench as the pipeline without winding the pipeline; access points and sufficient margin should be reserved at the valve box, endpoint or maintainable location.

Recommended Cable

14 AWG solid copper direct burial tracer wire for DIY/irrigation access; more professional open trench available with 12 AWG solid copper or HS-CCS. Blue is used for drinking water and purple can be used for reclaimed water/irrigation.

Wiring Notes

The connector must use a direct burial waterproof connector; both ends of the wire should be accessible to positioning equipment; it is recommended to conduct a continuity test before and after burial.

Project Note

This guide is used for product selection, product education and project communication and does not replace the judgment of local NEC/NFPA, equipment manufacturer manuals, project drawings, AHJ or licensed electricians/contractors. Jacket marking, listing documents, equipment terminals and local regulations must be checked before installation. Follow local requirements to contact 811 / Call Before You Dig before digging.

Case 2 · Municipal water/sewage/gas

Utility non-metallic pipeline positioning system

Municipal and utility projects are more focused on acceptance, long-term corrosion resistance, color identification and positioning continuity. The goal of the system is not to lay just one line, but to allow future locators to reliably access and track the entire line.

System Equipment

HDPE water/sewer/gas pipe, test station, access box, magnesium anode/ground rod, waterproof connector, marker post, as-built records.

Cable Route

Lay continuously along the main line, and reserve connections at valves, hydrants, meters, test stations or access points according to specifications; maintain electrical continuity at the connection between branch lines and the main line.

Recommended Cable

12 AWG HS copper-clad steel, 30mil HDPE/PE insulation for open cut; colors by APWA: Blue Water, Green Wastewater, Yellow Gas, Orange Telecom, Red Electric, Purple Reclaimed Water/Irrigation.

Wiring Notes

Ordinary THHN or indoor low-voltage wires cannot be regarded as official tracer wires; professional projects must prepare jacket marking, breaking strength, insulation thickness, conductor standards and accessory lists.

Case 3 · HDD / Boring

High intensity tracer system for horizontal directional drilling and drawn pipes

When HDD pulls pipe, the tracer wire is subjected to constant tension, friction, and construction shock. Ordinary pure copper wires are easy to break. After the breakage, the pipeline cannot be positioned in the future, and the callback cost is high.

System Equipment

HDD rig, HDPE conduit/pipe, pull head, EHS tracer wire, waterproof splice/access point, locator transmitter/receiver.

Cable Route

The tracer wire and pipeline are pulled in synchronously, and the HDD segment is as continuous as possible without joints; both ends are returned to maintainable access points and a test margin is reserved.

Recommended Cable

12 AWG or 10AWG EHS copper-clad steel, 45mil HDPE/HMWPE insulation, engineered tracer wire approximately 1150 lb or higher break load.

Wiring Notes

HDDs cannot be directly replaced with standard Amazon small rolls of pure copper wire; projects must confirm break load, insulation thickness, splice limits, pull force, and acceptance testing.

Case 4 · Communications/Fiber Optic Pipeline

HDPE Conduit / Fiber Duct Positionable Duct Systems

Communications fiber optics and campus underground conduits often require locatable paths. The goal of the system is to plan trace lines, warning tapes, pipe colors, access points and as-built records together.

System Equipment

HDPE conduit, fiber duct, pull box, handhole, detectable warning tape, orange tracer wire, access point.

Cable Route

Lay it out synchronously along the communication pipeline or optical fiber conduit, and reserve access at handholes, pull boxes and endpoints; long-distance projects set test points according to specifications.

Recommended Cable

Orange tracer wire or conduit with tracer wire; engineering projects can choose 12 AWG CCS or embedded tracer wire according to specifications.

Wiring Notes

Communication pipelines should avoid color confusion with other facilities; positioning wires cannot replace communication conductors, nor can they be used as power supply lines.

Is Is higher conductivity always better for tracer wire?

Conductivity is important, but the complete system also looks at tensile strength, insulation, joints, access points, ground/anode, color identification and locate testing. HDD and pipe-bursting projects usually require higher tensile strength.

Can 14 AWG pure copper tracer wire be used for every project?

No. 14 AWG pure copper is suitable for residential, irrigation, and short-to-medium open-trench locating. Municipal, HDD, and gas projects should follow project specifications for 12 AWG/10 AWG high-strength tracer wire and matching accessories.
